It's National Feral Cat Day which is a day meant to bring awareness to Trap-Neuter-Return and other humane programs for feral cats that are in the best interest of the cats and the community. As much as we wish all kitties had furever homes, there are cats that look look like us but they are afraid of humans so they live their lives outside in colonies.
We know in cities everywhere there are feral kitties and we understand that the instinct for some humans is to take feral cats to a shelter thinking it's a safer place for them than being out in the elements. What we know from Alley Cat Allies is that there would be virtually no chance of adoption and the cats would be killed. The reason being is that shelters handle adoptable cats and one that is afraid of humans certainly doesn't fit that criteria. Feral cats can live healthy lives in their colonies but they do not belong in animal shelters.
In addition to Alley Cat Allies, there are organizations across the country that perform Trap-Neuter-Return for feral and even domesticated cats for free or low cost. If you see a colony of feral cats or know of someone who has an unaltered cat, please help spread the word of these programs in your community.

We do not have a program like that here in this small town, but I will definitely ask our vet about the new feral kitty that has been hanging around our home these past couple of days. It will not be easy to have her neutered, as she is VERY afraid of humans. Wish me luck :)

Great information! I have heard about programs that neuter feral cats, its a great idea. There are some feral cats that live near our vacation home on Vancouver Island, and there is a neuter program in that community.
I wish I could have done more for my alley cats - no one would help out at all. Alley Cat Allies has shown up on a lot of blogs today - Happy I sent them a check last week...

That is such a good post and Alley cat Allies do such a good job helping the feral cats. We don't have any TNR programs here that I know of. But it is such a great program for sure. Hope all of you have a great day.
That is a very good program. It's sad that not all cats have a great home but it would be even sadder to have them end up in a shelter and...oh no I can't even think about it.

Officially few people care here but there are plenty of people who do their own TNR. Good for you to have a Day!

I feel so bad for those kitties! I know it's best for them but it still makes me sad. I'm glad there are people like Alley Cat Allies to help them.
Funny you should post this today--we were just all talking about the cats in our parking lot at work. Everyone feeds them and they have shelter...somewhat. But I really hate to see the little ones coming all the time. I might have to look into getting them some help. I'm sure in Chicago there are some organizations that will help us.
