Today I was reminiscing about how four years ago at this time I was at the humane society waiting for my furever home. Many people came and saw me but I continued to wait for my real Mommy and Daddy to show up, which they eventually did on November 3rd, 2006. They couldn't resist this face...
After that day I have found out that I might have been passed by because I'm mostly black and black kitties are the least likely to be adopted for some reason. I'm glad my mommy and daddy didn't think that way and for everyone else who doesn't think that way either, many shelters are offering reduced adoption fees for black kitties at this time of year. Some even have reduced fees on black and/or orange kitties like me! Here's a couple:
Our adoption special will continue through the end of October. Adopt any black and/or orange cat for 50% off! In addition, if you are wearing Oregon State University colors you will receive $10 off the adoption fee of a cat not already on special or $10 off the adoption fee of any dog.
In recognition of the San Francisco Giants magical season and play-off appearance, we’re initiating a special “black and orange” adoption promotion. Through October 31, folks can adopt any black or orange cat for $9. Cats and baseball? It's a perfect match. Cats have 9 lives. Baseball has 9 innings and 9 players.

If you or someone you know is looking for a kitty, check out these specials or see if there are any in shelters in your area. Of course the shelters are careful about adoptions of black kitties near Halloween but now might be the time to find your new kitty!

Have you been lucky enough to have a black kitty?

Happy Tortie Tuesday!

My lovely girl, we are so happy that you ended up in your most perfect home. Who could resist you??

My human's first cat as a (semi) grown-up was black. He was also part Siamese, so he had quite a voice.

P.S. I wrote about a tortie today who was adopted by some friends of my human!

How wonderful that you found just the right mom and dad that gave you a wonderful home. Love the comparison to cats and baseball that humane society is using for their special.

Momma thinks we're ready for a brother.....but he has to be the perfect kitty for our home so she wants to look around very carefully.

Clearly your mom and dad have very good taste to choose such a unique and beautiful kitty such as yourself Isabella! I hope October is a good month for black cat adoptions! :)

Isabella, you were just waiting for the RIGHT Mommy & Daddy! You are absolutely beautiful!!!

Mommy LOVED the items that she purchased at your Mommy's Etsy store!!!! Beautiful and perfect!

Lin said... October 12, 2010 at 4:53 AM

In our area, they are more careful about black cat adoptions around Halloween. Potential adopters are VERY carefully screened.

Russ said... October 12, 2010 at 5:07 AM

Well Isabella it seems the wait for you was worth it. You found a wonderful home. It is too bad that there are so many superstitions about black cats. They are just kitties just like you.

Duni said... October 12, 2010 at 6:14 AM

I sure couldn't have passed up a face as sweet as yours! I'm so happy for you that your found the purrfect furever home!
And I love black kitties just as much as any other colour :)

As you know, Angel is mostly black. One of my first kitties growing up was all black. So I definitely have a weakness for them. :) You're so lucky to have such a wonderful home, Isabella!

Isabella, we are so very glad your parents adopted you. As far as people discriminating against black kitties goes, Mom and I think that is just plain ignorant. Black kitties are super duper!

Black kitties are so pretty! I'm glad they are offering such great deals so those kitties will find furever homes :)

Laura said... October 12, 2010 at 7:41 AM

You and your family are lucky you found each other! I agree that black kitties are hard to place - we had trouble finding a home for Vivien - a front porch visitor, so she became part of our family!

We are so happy you have a furrver home and we purray that ALL kitties of ALL colors, get adopted!

I've had two all black kitties and now I have two Tuxies, two oranges, and an orange & white job. And they are all GREAT! Sylvester, who is seven, is settling in SO well. I highly recommend adopting an older kitty!

Isabella, you have a great Home and I'm glad you waited to get *just* the right one.

Isabella, thank you for that information. I never knew that about orange and black kitties.
Hope you have a great Tortie Tuesday :)

You were a furry smart girl to wait for your own mommy and daddy. I think we Torie girls are just the Princesses of Catdom. We are so beautiful and special.

Marg said... October 12, 2010 at 1:07 PM

Isabella, we sure are glad you found that wonderful home. Those look like great deals for adopting a cat.
We have two black cats here and they are both great cats. Those two would have 2 strikes against them if I had taken to the shelter. They were also feral kitties. Good to see you Isabella. Take care.

I am so glad you found your home darling Issy.

I am disheartened to hear that adoption agencies are running 'specials' for black cats at this time of year however. Here in Cali. from what I understand black cats are never adopted out in the Halloween month. Owing to the disturbed folks who have too many superstitions and/or 'ceremonies' where black cats are...shall we say... not treated very nicely.

As for me; I make sure all my kittehs are locked up good & tight on 'all hallow's eve' as I'm sure all the CB fuuriends out there do to.

Hi Isabella! We can't belive that some people might have passed you over because you are mostly black - that is so silly to us! Our mom isn't really concerned with color - she did want an orange kitty at some point to be sure all the colors were covered (she totally forgot about brown and a bunch of those colors - she was just trying to be sure that she had furs to show on her clothes no matter what color they are - hee hee). Mom's first kitty, our big brother Floyd, was black when she got him - he got a bit reddish brown in his last year or so before going to teh bridge, but he was always a black cat to her!

Julie Magers Soulen said... October 12, 2010 at 4:40 PM

I don't know why that is but black dogs have a hard time getting adopted too. Seems so unfair! We have had two rescued black dogs and they have been the best of dogs.

I had two black kitties before Isabella! I love black kitties! Someday I might have one again. I hope she'll be as pretty as you. Love, Reeni and Moon

You do have an irresistible face, my dear. And you were lucky to find such a loving home! I never did understand why black animals are less likely to be adopted. Don't tell Scarlett, but I've always loved black cats and dogs.

GrammyMouseTails said... October 12, 2010 at 8:53 PM

You are a very pretty kitty, and I am sure that is why your humans were so lucky to find you at the shelter. thank you for spreading this important imforation for other animals that still need fur-ever homes. ~hugs~Faythe @GMT

Isabella, you are so lucky that the right people came along at the right time. Your face is fascinating. And there seems to be such pensiveness in your expression.

My fluffy kitty is totally black, and I am lucky to have had him in our lives for14 years so far!

Splendid Little Stars said... October 13, 2010 at 7:50 AM

Great post, Isabella!
A long time ago I had an all black cat named Midnight, whom we called Blackie. She was the sweetest! My daughter now has a kitty named Edward Bunk who is all black except for a very tiny tuft of white.
Black and mostly black kitties rock!
Excuse me a moment.....
Oliver just told me he wants it known that he has lots of black fur and it helps keep him very warm when he lies in a sun puddle .
